Orick, California — On Sunday, Northern California residents are invited to a community celebration for President Jimmy Carter’s 100th Birthday. Carter expanded the Redwood National Park in 1978 and this tribute will acknowledge his peace, diplomacy, environmental, housing, health and human rights policies during his administration and work with The Carter Center in Atlanta, Georgia.
Sponsors of the event include The Orick Chamber of Commerce and The SEED Center. In addition, The Jimmy Carter Jamboree, founded in 2017, is a grassroots California initiative to recognize Carter’s visionary policies. It has been supported by a California Resolution of 2018, along with six county (Marin, Humboldt, San Diego, Sacramento, Tuolomne, Santa Cruz & Alameda) proclamations and two city proclamations (Novato, Fairfax), some calling for a “Jimmy Carter Week.” “The Jimmy Carter Jamboree wants to acknowledge the sacrifice many made in Orick during the expansion of the Redwood National Park. We want to bring this moment of time full circle and use our initiative to support the community of Orick.”
The speakers will include Donna Hufford (Orick Chamber of Commerce), Steve Madrone (Humboldt County Supervisor), and Michael Stocker (Ocean Conservation Research).
Music is provided by Arcata based Artist/Musician Sean Powers and Michael Stocker. A celebratory birthday cake and drinks will be offered to the community.
President Jimmy Carter served as our 39th President from 1976-1980. Later he established The Carter Center in Atlanta, Georgia in partnership with Emory University, with a “fundamental commitment to human rights and the alleviation of human suffering. The Center seeks to prevent and resolve conflicts, enhance freedom and democracy, and improve health.” Carter has stood behind fair housing, demonstrated by his commitment to Habitat for Humanity. Since 1986, The Carter Center has led the international campaign to eradicate Guinea worm disease, working closely with ministries of health and local communities, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and many others. Guinea worm disease could become the second human disease in history, after smallpox, to be eradicated.
