Tweety Birds

A male goldfinch

One of our favorite summer residents is the American Goldfinch. These colorful finches have been locally called “wild canaries” and they return each spring in late April and early May. The males have striking sharp colors but the females are also attractive with their more muted greener tones. Goldfinches are a backyard bird feeder favorite but you will see both because of their striking beauty and also for their circus-like antics. You will see them hanging in odd acrobatic positions from various trees and shrubs to eat seeds and access food not as easily reachable to other bird and even other finch species. There’s never a dull moment watching these tweety birds!
